First attempt playing with isomalt

You may recall a couple of weeks ago I had mentioned purchasing the supplies to make a beer bottle mold. All the supplies arrived, I bought some beer and made a silcone mold from a beer bottle. Making the mold was the easy part. Learning how to work with isomalt (sugar)is a little more challening.

This is my first peice of work with sugar. I am pretty happy with how it came out for the first attempt. I don't have the ebible printer yet, but it will be coming soon. Once I add edible labels it should look that much better.

My Bee Hive cake made it to the top!

I am a huge fan of Cake Central.   I visit the site daily and post my cake pictures there as well.  Most of the people there are cake decorators looking for new ideas and inspiration - that is where most of my ideas come from.   As a member of Cake Central you can comment on people's cakes and add them to your favourite list to reference later.

My cakes usually get a few comments and favs which is always a nice feeling.   Well the Bee Hive cake made it to the top.   It is on the front page of Cake Central this morning as the top 5 cake saved to people's fav's.    This is a huge compliment from Cake Central as the men and ladies on here are extremely talented and most of the cakes in the top 10 are ones I droll over but couldn't image having to make.

I am sure as new amazing cake pictures get posted today I will fall back as this list changes daily.  But for this morning  I feel like a super star :)

Bee Hive

Did you know that the name Melissa means Honey-bee?   I didn't, until a few months ago.  My sister-in-law Melissa had mentioned it a few months back while explaining a tattoo she has of a Honey-bee.  So right away I had this cake picked out for her, just counting down the days until her birthday.

Happy Birthday Melissa!

Happy Valentine's Day

Today was a busy day.   I had a few orders of Valentine's cupcake roses to make.  I also made this box of chocolate cake for my hubby.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Painter's Pallet

This was a fun cake to make.   The birthday girl is an artist in her spare time, so hopefully she will enjoy this cake.

I used a new fondant for this one and I am in love!!  It was so easy to use and covered this cake like a dream. I will test it out on a few other cakes and if all goes well this will become my fondant of choice.   The bonus is it has a creamy taste that many say tastes like the inside of a Oreo cookie.....yummy.

New Logo

Thanks to the amazing work of Malinda at Studio dpi who took the AMAZING cake smashing photos of my daughter then turned them into a logo and business card for Smashing Cake Designs.

Great Job Malinda!

Doing the happy dance

Well, I am one very excited Cake Decorator today.  This week has been a very productive one.   I received the stamp of approval from the Health Unit to operate Smashing Cake Designs….this has been a huge stress so I am thrilled that is done and I can stop worrying.

Our new logo is almost complete.  I can’t wait to show it off to all of you.

I just found out one of the most amazing sugar artists will be in Ontario this July teaching a course I have been wanted to take for months now.  I have purchased some of her on-line turtorials which have been very successful for me, so I can't wait to learn from her in person.  She comes all the way from England and her skills are amazing -  check out her blog Extra Icing on the Cake

I have also had my eyes on some amazing cakes that have sugar crafted beer bottles on them.  Well I learnt how to make these yesterday!!!  I have ordered my supplies and will be knocking down the man in brown when my boxes arrive in the next few weeks.   Stay tuned to see some sugar beer bottles and some fun cakes for men.
